Pig farmers in CameroonWe, the North West Pig Farmers Co-operative, NOWEPIFAC, are a group of enthusiastic pig farmers in Cameroon.
Our motto is "Fighting the Feed, Marketing and Disease Crisis of Pig farming". We have many ideas and are very keen to develop its skills in pig farming.
With some help from abroad, we have realized several goals and projects: we have organized many trainings on farming, we have built a demonstration farm, have bought a truck...
And at the moment we are involved in a project called "A Pig Van Djouke project" "SOS project" and "a slaughter house project".
We have a board which is presided by an inspiring chairman, Atomba Titus Tegwi.
Together as a co-operative we are strong: we can buy feed for lower prices, have a more stable position in the market and together we tackle animal diseases.
In Bamenda, our co-operative has its own building, where pigs are slaughtered and the meat is inspected and sold. Moreover, this building is a place for meetings and sociability.
The cooperative started at Azire New church Junction.
Our mission statement was set as“ fighting the Feed , Marketing and Disease crisis of pig farming”(FMD)
The first project was started by both the founder Arie Peter Wingelaar and Hanneke Mertens of the Netherlands, the Dutch Ministry of developmen cooperation (NCDO) build the capacity of cooperative by providing working material like Office cupboard, computers, microscope, tables/chairs, a cooperative truck, a feed mill and a pig demonstration farm for the training of members.
The project kept running for 3years from then.
Current president/coordinator of the cooperative, Titus Tegwi Atomba was selected for the training in Netherlands, and successfully came back with an International Diploma in Animal feed production.
Our cooperative truck was broken, and We received the sum of 1.3million franc CFA for the repairs of this truck, from Mr.Arie Peter Wingelaar with the Hans Blanket Foundation.
The same savior/God father of our cooperative, Mr. Arie Wingelaar, linked us to the Dutch girl, Djouke. She started a project named“A Pig Van Djouke” meaning a pig from Djouke which is the best success among all the projects of the cooperative.
This number has risen to above 100 beneficiaries this year 2014.
*The Foundation DIO of the Netherlands funded 8 farmer trainings which brought in experts from the Netherlands on pig, poultry and rabbit farming to train farmers over a period of 2 years.
By the close of the project, over 200 farmers received attestation of training in the above mentioned livestock and most especially pigs which was our focus.
