INTRODUCTION:
It should be noted that the September donation was actually part money for a flight ticket to attend an ECHO- International Conference in Florida, USA by the cooperative project coordinator.
As the invited member of the pig cooperative failed to obtain a visa for the US, the money was then diverted for other concerns of the cooperative with permission from the donor Mr. Go Komatsu.
The second donation was directed for the completion of the bio-security project and the initiation of T-shirt/piglet bank project in Cameroon.
With the on-going sociopolitical crisis in Cameroon, the pig farmers cooperative is currently facing a lot of financial challenges in raising its running cost and so it is barely surviving and the Japan donation is helping a lot to cover some cost and help in the survival and sustainability of its vision and mission of the cooperative.
Some of the board members, stay far from the cooperative head office and so find it difficult to attend board, meetings thus giving room for some urgent decisions to be taken irrespective of the cooperative governing laws but usually for the interest of its members and would be members.
BIO-SECURITY FENCE PROJECT:
The bio-security fence project is now at its final phase. The walls all round have been raised, some parts with sun-dry blocks while others with cement blocks. Concrete and sand were bought and used for the building and for the concreting of some damaged portions of the pig styles in preparation for stocking.
Some two middle aged young female piglets OR guilts were bought and feed mixed and kept to kick start the "Piglet Bank Project".
Actually, we are saying that two female piglets are currently in the Mobile Livestock Piggery farm being fed with the intention of passing on the off-springs at delivery and weaning.
T-Shirt Project:
25 T-shirts of different colors have been bought and the logo printed on them as prescribed by our vision. Farmers who have seen the T-shirts at completion are very excited to start buying them with the hope that they wish to be beneficiaries of the' 'PASSING ON THE GIFT'' initiative.
Considering the idea and suggestion of our pig expert from the Netherlands, Mr. Arie Wingelaar, we would restrict new membership and prospect of expanding but rather will continue to support our current existing members.
His suggestion does not stop the sales of our T-shirts to non-members who share the vision of being a blessing if blessed. We want to launch the T-shirt project in a very special way, even though with the crisis and the absence of piglets to pass over this year 2019.
SIGN POST AND COOPERATIVE OFFICE RENTS:
The wooden- ply-wood sign post placed in front of the cooperative building along the road has been eaten up by white ants over the years and so, this time we have decided to use an iron sheet to write the sign post of the cooperative so that it could last and stay resistant to sunlight , rain and white ants.
The cooperative head office building with hall has accrued rents for quite some time now, so we were able to reduce the rents by 4 months.
PHONE/INTERNET COMMUNICATION CREDIT:
This cost includes bike transport for cooperative errands, like T-shirt purchase and follow up for printing and for sign post board /iron poles transportation from town to the cooperative head office. The write up on the sign post and planting with cement and concrete along the road side is yet to be accomplished.
It has been framed and painted with brown and white paint, ready for writing on top. In our next report, we will have it completed and planted.
FREE TRAINING OF PIG FARMERS:
The pig cooperative organized a one day training of pig farmers taking advantage of the ghost town scenario to bring farmers together on Monday 18th November 2019.
Ghost town days are every Mondays, and these are days declared by the separatist fighters which people are expected to stay at home, so we took advantage of that day to call for an indoor study for those who can brave the oughts' and make it to the training hall. We had no photos due to camera failure.
Field reports from Mobile consultancy livestock service, which is the technical service unit of the pig cooperative, gave an exposure of several pig farm management errors that drew the attention of cooperative management to call for a free one day training session for pig farmers. An announcement was made in churches found in the neighboring quarters and the day's agenda was as follows;
'ANNOUNCEMENT'
The management of North West Pig Farmers Cooperative Society announces for the interest of all pig farmers resident within the neighborhoods of Mbomassa, Mbatu, Abangoh, Atuakom 1 and 2 that a one day training of pig farmers has been scheduled to take place on Monday 18th 2019 at the cooperative's hall at upper zone 3 Mbomassa, starting at 9.00AM prompt. CHALLENGES FACED BY THE COOPERATIVE THIS YEAR 2019:
Difficulties in inviting members for regular cooperative meetings as well as to participate in cooperative action plans due to the high level of insecurity created by the on-going sociopolitical crisis in Cameroon.
General drop in income from all income sources with a consequent drop in the cooperative employee/labor force caused by current crisis.
Difficulties to visit our project sites by our development partners abroad who wish to evaluate past projects in order to have a better judgment which will determine their way forward as our region has been declared a risk territory within the context of the on-going sociopolitical crisis.
THE PIG COOPERATIVE NOW HAS THE FOLLOWING MORE PROJECTS :
1. The biosecurity fence needs to be plastered. That is, to prevent the walls from soaking during the raining season especially the areas which are not built with cement bricks but rather with sun-dry bricks.
2. We are currently fighting with the abrupt stoppage of water supply to the mobile livestock piggery farm which doubles as the cooperative demonstration farm, so mobile livestock members have engaged in the digging of a well, that is, bore-hole water below the piggery. If they succeed with the digging then their next action will be to put concrete cement rings inside the well and install a water pulling system. They are currently fetching water from far for the pigs, which is quite more of an up-hill task.
3. They need to continue stocking the farm with 'MORE' high performance breeds and proceed with the dream vision of Djouke in the 'T-shirt/Piglet bank' project.
4. There is a need to complete the cooperative sign post by contracting an artist to write another one on the already purchased, framed and painted iron sheet. It's our wish that the putting in place of the sign post be a twin occasion together with the launching of the T-shirt and piglet bank project in the presence of cooperative members.
